Solar for Sakai Project Phase 1 Completion Celebration

Friday, December 12, 2008, 1:15 pm to 2 pm

Switch on to Positive Power!

On Friday, December 12, 2008 from 1:15 to 2:00 P.M., Sakai Intermediate School and Community Energy Solutions invites you to join in the celebration of the Phase One completion of Solar for Sakai project - the installation of 30 solar panels on the school’s gymnasium roof!

Festivities include sunshine-inspired marimba music, artwork, and poetry by Sakai students. Guest speakers include Sakai teacher and Solar for Sakai project champion, Todd Erler, other representatives from the Bainbridge Island School District, Executive Director of Community Energy Solutions Joe Deets, Senator Phil Rockefeller and U.S. Congressman Jay Inslee.

This first phase of the Solar for Sakai project includes a 5 kilowatt photovoltaic system that converts free renewable sunshine into clean electricity and incorporates on-line monitoring of the energy produced and carbon displaced. These solar panels will not only save the school money, they will generate revenue, as the school will be paid for all the electricity it produces under our State's Renewable Energy Production Incentive Program. Importantly, the School District has agreed to reinvest the revenues and savings into enhancing energy education and implementing further energy savings measures at Sakai School.

Solar for Sakai is the first community-based renewable energy project on Bainbridge Island. It was initiated and managed by Community Energy Solutions, in collaboration with the Bainbridge Island School District, Puget Sound Energy and Bonneville Environmental Foundation. What makes the project unique is the active participation by people in the community, which has led to a real sense of local ownership. Teachers, students, parents, and many other islanders have stepped forward to create a clean energy system that will benefit the community for decades to come. This project brings the talk about achieving energy independence for the country to action here locally.

Come and celebrate this new positive power source - Solar for Sakai. Everybody is welcome to join in and power up the project’s second phase: the addition of 30 more solar panels for a total of 10 kilowatts! For details on the December 12th celebration, please contact:  Joe Deets, jwdeets@cenergysolutions.org, Todd Erler, todderler@gmail.com, or Debbi Lester, debbilester@yahoo.com.
